Meat Plant Executive Order Is Not What It Seems

President Trump’s April 28 executive order was widely reported as requiring meat plants to stay open, yet Dennis Aftergut, Renne Public Law Group, says the president does not have the authority to compel owners to operate plants they had closed because of Covid-19. The order merely delegates to the agriculture secretary the authority to encourage plants to follow federal guidelines and prioritize federal contracts.
