A graduate of the UC Berkeley School of Law (Boalt Hall), John L. Burris has practiced law for more than 40 years. He is primarily known for his work in the area of Civil Rights with an emphasis on police misconduct excessive force cases raising federal questions under Federal Code Section 1983. His other practice areas include employment litigation, criminal defense, personal injury, and toxic torts and mass class actions. John Burris frequently provides legal commentary for local and national print and televised media including KTVU Channel 2, KRON 4, MSNBC and other radio outlets. He is a frequent lecturer on the topics of police and criminal justice issues. In 2009, John Burris published BLUE vs. BLACK: Let’s End the Conflict between Police and Minorities, and was named one of California’s leading 100 attorneys by the Los Angeles and San Francisco Daily Journal. Two years later, the American Trial Lawyers Association tapped him as one of California’s top 100 trial lawyers.
