Six members of the RPLG team will present at the virtual California Public Employers Labor Relations Association’s (CALPELRA) 45th Annual Training Conference in November on six different panels.

 “The RPLG team looks forward to another year of presentations speaking at the CALPELRA Annual Training Conference,” said Founding Partner Jonathan Holtzman. “We deeply appreciate our partnership with this very successful organization.”

CALPELRA provides superb training and professional development opportunities for public sector labor and employment professionals. This year’s Annual Training Conference, titled “Agents of Change Unleash Your Superpowers!”, will cover a wide variety of labor and employment topics of great interest to labor and employment professionals working in California public agencies.

Wait…I Was Supposed to Do What? Navigating the Complexities and Aftermath Of Emergency Personnel Decisions During A Pandemic

Senior Associate Spencer Wilson will cover common pitfalls in this area and offer tips on how public employees can avoid missteps.  He will also describe recent and potential COVID-related legislation.

California Supreme Court:  No More Pension Spiking, Limitation of California Rule

Jon and Partner Linda M. Ross will discuss how the recent Cal Fire decision and future California Supreme Court decision will affect various pension and retiree health benefits after COVID-19 left underfunded pension funds in a dire condition.

Financial Outlook for Negotiators and Human Resources Professionals

Jon will team up with Russ Branson from Russ Branson Consulting and Michael Coleman from the League of California Cities and the California Society of Municipal Finance Officers (CSMFO). The trio will examine how human resource professionals should consider future planning and configuration of their local agency’s workforce.

Management, Labor, and Public Policy: A Sacramento Perspective

RPPG Managing Director of Government Affairs Dane Hutchings will pair up with Service Employees International Union (SEIU) State Council Michelle Castro to discuss the inner workings of the state’s politics and policymaking regarding areas impacting public employers. Dane and Michelle will also offer their thoughts on labor and employment policy trends for 2021.

Concession Bargaining in the Wake of COVID-19

Jon will partner with LaTanya Bellow from the City of Berkeley and Carol Isen from the City and County of San Francisco for the session. The panel will analyze how these public sector labor negotiators bargained through the Great Recession in the context of the continued revenue impact from the COVID-19 pandemic.
