RPLG Welcomes Sam Wheeler

Renne Public Law Group (RPLG) welcomes Sam Wheeler as Senior Counsel. Before joining RPLG, Sam spent more than eight years serving as a career law clerk for Magistrate Judge Joseph C. Spero of the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California, where he drafted orders and bench memoranda in a wide range of civil cases, as well as criminal proceedings. During Sam’s tenure, Judge Spero presided over more than 1,500 civil cases.

“Working at the court for the better part of a decade gave me the opportunity to address cases running the full gamut of federal civil litigation,” said Sam. “When I was ready to shift back to advocacy from the other side of the bench, I looked for somewhere with both the range of work and the dedication to public service that I found so rewarding during my clerkship.”

While clerking for Judge Spero, Sam worked on bench and jury trials that centered around a wide variety of topics, including employment discrimination, electric-utility liability, the sale of a small business, maritime law, procurement contracts and tax penalties. Prior to his tenure at the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California, Sam built his skills as a civil and antitrust litigator at Crowell & Moring. Early in his law career, Sam co-authored Patt v. Donner: A Simulated Casefile for Learning Civil Procedure, a semester-long learning resource that seeks to make the notoriously inaccessible topic of civil procedure more approachable to law students.

Sam’s far-reaching experience as a law clerk and litigator makes him an invaluable asset to the RPLG team.

“I’m honored to join the fantastic attorneys at RPLG, and look forward to harnessing my skills to support communities throughout the state I call home,” said Sam.

Sam’s educational background includes a B.A. in international development studies from the University of California, Los Angeles and a J.D. from the University of California, Berkeley.

“Sam’s wide breadth of experience and deep knowledge of civil procedure make him a great fit for our firm,” said Founding Partner Jonathan Holtzman. “He has established an excellent track record and we’re excited to see how his career develops at RPLG.”

RPLG’s lawyers provide the tools to strengthen and preserve public services, empower policymakers to further their objectives and collaborate with in-house staff to identify workable solutions to complex problems, develop strategies and implement solutions.
